About Nevada Humane Society
Nevada Humane Society (NHS) is a no-kill organization creating and sustaining a no-kill community in Northern Nevada. Founded in 1932, the mission of NHS is to promote animal welfare & provide for the relief and prevention of all animals suffering in Northern Nevada, all while finding homes and providing care for homeless pets. Their mission is accomplished through quality animal care, comprehensive adoption programs, accessible low-cost spay/neuter services, a free Animal Help Desk and many other community outreach programs.
Each year, over 12,000 homeless pets come through the shelter along with nearly 10,000 other pets who receive medical care and other services. Since 2007, when their no-kill shelter policy was established, over 80,000 lives have been saved. In 2014, NHS expanded lifesaving efforts to include Carson City. NHS is a charitable, non-profit organization dependent upon donations. They do not receive funding from government agencies or national animal welfare groups.
Thanks to the amazing support of the community & the hard work of their dedicated staff, volunteers, and rescue partners, they have achieved dramatic results. Washoe County is now one of the safest communities in the United States for homeless animals and received the Maddie’s Community Lifesaving Award in 2012. This success is the community’s achievement, & it speaks volumes about the compassion, generosity, and commitment of the residents of Washoe County.
